Gratitude Journal Guide: How to Choose One and Actually Keep Using It

A gratitude journal sounds simple: write down what you are thankful for. In practice, plenty of people start one with enthusiasm and stop within a few weeks. The difference is rarely willpower. It is usually the journal itself and how you use it.

What to look for in a gratitude journal

  • Guided prompts. Specific questions stop you writing "family, health, coffee" every day.
  • A short daily routine. If it takes more than five or ten minutes, it will be the first thing to go on a busy day.
  • Space for more than gratitude. Goals, habits and reflection give you a reason to keep returning once the novelty fades.
  • A format you will pick up. A journal that looks good on your desk is one you will use. A journal with dated pages can feel like pressure; undated pages are more forgiving.
  • A realistic length. A six-month journal feels achievable, and finishing one is motivating.

How to make a gratitude journal stick

Be specific

"I'm grateful for my sister" is fine. "I'm grateful that my sister rang just to check I got home safely" is much more powerful, because it makes you notice the detail.

Write about people, not just things

Gratitude directed at other people tends to feel more meaningful than gratitude for objects.

Vary the questions

Rotate between "what went well today", "what am I looking forward to" and "what challenge am I glad I faced". It keeps the habit fresh.

Pair it with a cue

Morning coffee, the evening commute, brushing your teeth. Pick one and stick to it.

Gratitude is more than a feeling

Gratitude fits into a bigger picture. We think about a good life through four pillars: health, wealth, relationships and freedom. A gratitude practice helps you notice what is already working in each. You can read more in our guide to the four pillars of happiness.
